Choose a smaller ship
Nowadays there is a range of different cruise lines to choose from but we recommend a solo cruiser consider a ship of max approx. 1,000 passengers and even less if that works for your itinerary. Fewer passengers usually means there is a higher crew-to-passenger ratio so solo travellers get recognised and their preferences remembered, making for an intimate, friendly atmosphere. On the smaller ships, you will start seeing familiar faces on board making it easier to meet people.
Go for all-inclusive options
The all-inclusive option makes it easier for you to join others for a drink, a speciality meal or an excursion and not to have to work out who pays for what. Sometimes it is nice to just indulge in a glass of champagne after an exciting day exploring and not even think about it as you watch the sunset or cruise out of the port.
Meet the team onboard
Many cruises arrange events for guests travelling solo at the beginning of the cruise and other activities during the cruise so make sure the team know you would like to participate. In the restaurants let the Maitre D’ know your choice of joining others for meals or that you prefer to dine alone. The team will be great allies in making your trip just what you want.
Participate in shore excursions
Part of the enjoyment of your cruise will be to explore the ports or surrounding areas that you visit and this is an excellent way to meet other people. Some of the tours now focus on special themes like food, wine, ancient history or unique points of interest, these common interests are a great way to form friendships with fellow travellers.
Get Involved onboard
Cruise lines offer so many activities onboard for guests that you should never be bored, play bridge or learn to play, and enjoy special cooking classes, quiz sessions, dance classes, fitness groups and sporting activities. Take advantage of these to meet like-minded people and expand your network onboard
