7 Night cruise sailing roundtrip from Venice onboard Azamara Quest.
Lush coastlines peppered with islets, superb stretches of beach, and influences from Roman, Venetian, and Slavic cultures make Croatia a captivating destination—and perfect for our country-intensive experiences. From romantic Venice, it’s on to Rijeka. Explore the ornate Governor’s Palace with sweeping city views, and island hop by ferry around the Kvarner Bay. We stay late here, so take the time to stroll the enchanting Korzo promenade in the evening.
Next is one of Croatia’s most underrated and eclectic cities, where old meets new in unique, artsy Zadar. Part art installation, part musical instrument, don’t miss the mesmerizing sounds of the city’s Sea Organ. In the afternoon we make for the Inside Passage. A voyage to Croatia wouldn’t be complete without sailing this narrow passage of majestic fjords—something big ships just can’t compete with.
In the evening, we pull into Split, where we’ll stay the night. Discover the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Diocletian’s Palace, which dates back to the 4th century. Next is a late stay in Dubrovnik, where a walk along medieval walls reveals a mazelike city, before heading to the island of Hvar—fondly known as “the sunniest place in Europe”—,our last stop before returning to Venice.
Highlights of this cruise:
Experience Venice, one of the most captivating—and romantic—cities in the world. Tour the city’s cobblestone streets and overarching bridges, or take to the water and explore the canals on a water taxi or gondola. As you make your way through the city, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to shop, sample delicious Veneto wines, or people watch in Piazza San Marco.
Rijeka is fascinating to explore. The Governor’s Palace offers grand views over the harbor and of the grand Hapsburg interiors inside. Next climb the 16th century Petar Kruzic Stairway to the top of Trsat hill to visit the Church of Our Lady. Finally, ferry to the islands around the bay: cycle around Kirk, then stop at Baska beach - beautiful sand, clear water and “ice cream stands galore.”
Old meets new in beautiful Zadar. Walk quaint cobblestone streets from a bygone era that give way to modern marvels of architecture and technology. Escape the city and explore two national parks—Krka and Plitvice—both teeming with natural beauty. Afterwards, sample Maraschino, a traditional liqueur made from marasca cherries and produced in Zadar distilleries since the 16th century.
Venture to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Diocletian’s Palace, which dates back to the 4th century. Let intuition be your guide as you spend the day meandering through the cobblestone streets. Wander down to the water’s edge and stroll along the Riva, the spectacular white marble-esque promenade. And if you do lose your bearings, one of the locals will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.
From the moment you step beyond the stonewalls that protects Dubrovnik, you’ll understand what makes it so special. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is adorned with charming squares and centuries-old red-roofed buildings. Walk the walls for a spectacular view of the city, and if anything looks familiar, it’s probably because Dubrovnik is the home of King’s Landing on HBO’s Game of Thrones.
Known as the “Sunniest Place in Europe”, Hvar receives an average of 7.7 hours of sunshine per day. So sunbathing is a favorite pastime here, especially at the beaches of Dubovica and the Pakleni Islands. There are plenty more jaw-dropping sights to see here: lush olive groves, fruit orchards, fields of lavender, and dozens of vineyards, since Hvar is one of the top winemaking regions in Croatia.
