10 Night Cruise sailing from Athens roundtrip aboard Azamara Pursuit.
Depart from Athens, Europe’s oldest city, on a 10-day intensive voyage to Cyprus, two welcoming ports in Israel, and sun-soaked Crete. Enjoy a day at sea before awakening in Limassol, one of the busiest ports of the Mediterranean. Stroll narrow streets lined with shops, bars, tavernas, and explore markets full of fresh local produce and famous wines. History buffs might prefer the museums and archeological sites like Kolossi Castle, the Grand Mosque in the old Turkish quarter, the Archaeological Museum, or the medieval Limassol Castle, built around AD 1000.
The next morning you’ll arrive in Haifa, Israel, where a late stay follows an overnight, leaving lots of opportunity to discover biblical and archaeological sites of wonder, including Nazareth, Galilee, the River Jordan, and Elijah’s Cave.
Then, prepare for three days in Jerusalem. Walk the Stations of the Cross or see some of the most celebrated shrines on earth, including the Western Wall and the exquisite Dome of the Rock atop the Temple Mount. Enjoy a day cruising at sea before visiting Heraklion (Iraklion), Crete, then venture back to Athens, where you might want to stay a few extra days to see the ruins and relics of centuries ago.
Highlights of this cruise:
Start your journey in Piraeus with an archaeological walk past landmarks like the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Ancient Agora, and of course, the Acropolis. Afterwards, head to the Central Market for a feast of fresh fruit and veggies, nuts, olives, and Grecian cheese. Finally, check out a local taverna where you can rub elbows with the locals well into the wee hours of the night.
Haifa is a modern city and seaport on the slopes of Mount Carmel, and is an excellent base for visiting biblical and archaeological sites. Within easy reach are the Galilee, Nazareth, the River Jordan, as well as Safed, a holy mountaintop city steeped in the mysticism of Kabbalah. Today it is also immersed in the arts, and studios and galleries abound.
This ancient holy city won't fail to move you, regardless of your faith. From the Western Wall, to the Dome of the Rock, to the last remnants of the Temple of the Jews, Jerusalem is a woven tapestry of religion and history. Head to the modern Israel Museum and see the famous Dead Sea Scrolls for yourself.
As the largest city on the isle of Crete, with a history that dates back to the 9th century, Heraklion has seen its share of travelers over the millennia. It’s been ruled by the Arab, Venetian, and Ottoman empires. It’s hosted international athletes during the 2004 Olympics. And now, as a new port of call for Azamara, Heraklion welcomes you with a wealth of timeless experiences.
